All births are currently at Westmead Private Hospital.

Services

Dr Vickie Chio offers a wide range of services in Pregnancy, High Risk Pregnancy and Postpartum Care.

Pregnancy

First Trimester
- Ultrasound for confirmation of intrauterine pregnancy and identification of number of fetuses
- Management of early pregnancy complications (e.g. miscarriage, bleeding, excessive vomiting, etc)
- Identification of risk factors in pregnancy
- Routine antenatal blood test
- Screening for Down's syndrome at 11-13 weeks of gestation*

Second Trimester
- Routine fetal morphology ultrasound at 18-22 weeks of gestation*
- Universal screening of gestational diabetic mellitus (oral glucose tolerance test) at 24-28 weeks of gestation

Third Trimester
- Routine antenatal check-up with surveillance for pregnancy complications (e.g. pre-eclampsia, gestational diabetes, abnormal fetal presentation, placenta previa, etc)
- Regular monitoring of fetal growth, wellbeing and liquor volume
- Universal screening of Group B Streptococcus at 35-37 weeks of gestation
- Discussion on birth plan including the options of pain relief and the mode of delivery

* Referral to specialist ultrasound services will be made at appropriate gestation.

 

High Risk Pregnancy

Adverse Past Obstetric History

Prediction of Preterm Delivery
- The use of transvaginal ultrasound for cervical length assessment
- Regular monitoring and management if necessary (eg. cervical cerclage)
 

Prediction of Pre-Eclampsia / Intra-Uterine Growth Restriction (IUGR)
- Use the maternal medical history and Doppler ultrasound technique to predict the possibility of preeclampsia / IUGR
- Given prophylaxis ( eg. aspirin) and appropriate management if necessary
- Monitoring of fetal growth and fetal wellbeing
 

Identification of Underlying Medical Illness
Gestational Diabetes

- Team approach in the management (dietitian, diabetic nurse specialist)
- Ultrasound assessment for macrosomia and/ or polyhydramnios
- Liaise with endocrinologist in joint counselling and management if necessary
- Chronic Hepatitis B Carrier
- Regular monitor the chronic Hepatitis B activity status (eg. Hepatitis B DNA viral load) to predict the risk of neonatal infection
- Given anti-viral medication to decrease the risk of neonatal infection if necessary
- Liaise with hepatologist in joint counselling and management if necessary

Pre-existing Medical Disease Complicating Pregnancy
- Cardiac diseases
- Endocrine diseases, eg. thyroid disease
- Asthma / respiratory diseases
- Autoimmune / renal diseases
- Neurological disease
- Liaison with the physician in a team approach (e.g. liaison with a cardiologist in women with cardiac disease) will be arranged if necessary.


 

Postpartum Care

Postpartum Follow-up
- Ensure good postpartum recovery
- Identification of complications
- Contraceptive advice and pre-pregnancy advice for future pregnancies
- Cervical screening test

About Dr Vickie Chio

Dr Vickie Chio is a qualified obstetrician and gynaecologist who has an interest in high-risk obstetrics. She has worked in obstetrics and gynaecology for over 15 years. She is currently a specialist consultant at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and Liverpool Hospital.


Dr Chio obtained her medical degree from the University Of New South Wales, and subsequently completed her specialist training at Westmead Hospital and Nepean Hospital, where she gained valuable experience in obstetrics and gynaecology, especially in maternal fetal medicine. She provides personalized and comprehensive obstetric care for both low- and high-risk pregnancies. She is involved in medical student and specialist training, and is currently an examiner of the RANZCOG specialist examinations.


In addition to English and Cantonese, Vickie can speak conversational Mandarin, meaning her patients can speak to her in Mandarin during consultations if required.
